ESTE É O MEU NOME is a performance piece that draws on the life and work of Maria Mello Giraldes — a Lisbon-born poet with strong family ties to Covilhã, and author of “5 Espaços” (1983) and “6 Momentos” (1988) — to explore the idea of personal emancipation in other territories, fostering the emergence of new centres. The perception of, and search for, a form of femininity that remains ostracised and rendered invisible in contemporary society and in the bodies that constitute it will serve as the basis for a dramaturgy whose main references are the “ghost artists” of 20th-century Portugal.
In this way, the figure of Maria Mello Giraldes makes it possible to address the “non-inscription” and “non-representation”, in José Gil’s words, of female narratives. Just as “Memória da Matéria” and “Milénios” — two works that the poet never published during her lifetime — remained unpublished, ESTE É O MEU NOME also searches for a spatio-temporal occurrence capable of altering the order of things.
